The main downtown street in Brandon Manitoba is named after Thomas Lafayette Rosser, a Confederate major general in the American Civil War. After fleeing the States following the War, he became the chief engineer of Canadian Pacific Railway during its expansion into the Prairies. General Rosser was later fired from this position for selling privileged information on railway routes to land speculators for financial gain. 

Today people are becoming aware of the racist personal history and criminal behavior of General Rosser as the name source for our downtown street, and now is time for change!

Street names are important and help to define our identify as a community. General Rosser is not someone who Brandon should be celebrating with this honor. Brandon is not the community it was when it was founded and our street names need to recognize the modern and diverse community we have become. They should also reflect the aspirations of the community we wish to be.

This petition is a show of support to encourage Brandon City Council to rename Rosser Avenue.
