Boycott/Refund Assassin's Creed Shadows

The Issue

As passionate fans of the Assassin's Creed series, the inauthentic portrayal of Japanese culture and history in Assassin's Creed Shadows deeply concerns us. We value Assassin's Creed not just for its engrossing gameplay but also for its reliable depiction of various historical cultures and periods. The series, while rooted in alternate history science fiction, has always treated the history and the diverse cultures it portrays with respect, emphasizing cultural and historical context. However, Ubisoft Quebec's recent installment, Assassin's Creed Shadows, starkly deviates from this tradition of authenticity and respect. Countless players, historians, and scholars in both Western countries and Japan have disputed Ubi-Quebec's claim to represent Japanese culture and history authentically in Assassin's Creed Shadows. Instances of severe inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the representation of Japan's unique history and culture are sadly numerous. As a devoted community, we should not let this slip. We need to address this issue, we need Ubi-Quebec to understand the importance of authentic and respectful representation of cultures in its games, and we demand they take corrective action to ensure Assassin's Creed Shadows aligns with these standards.

To this end we offer several demands and proposals in the hopes of addressing these issues and opening conversation and grounds for discussion.

Demands:

1. An open apology to fans and critics including Asain fans, Black fans, and historians for disrespecting and misrepresenting Japanese history, culture and critics of Ubisoft.

2. Open discussions with fans, Japanese creators, historians and critics.

3. Discuss respectful representation, historical and cultural misrepresentation, fan expectations, business practices and responding to criticism.

4. Discuss proposed solutions and follow through on addressing criticism in updates and future projects.

Proposed Solutions:

1. Decanonize Assassin's Creed Shadows. Openly announce the game is not a historical fiction and instead a pure fantasy. Address cultural criticism and acknowledge historical mistakes as inaccuracies.

2. Directly address historical and cultural misrepresentation

Hire real Japanese historians from Japan, Japanese creators, and volunteer historians with peer reviewed historical and cultural changes

3. Cancel and redevelop AC Shadows using the method outlined in the demands and above proposals.

Let this petition show us that we will not stand for Ubisoft's disrespect for Japanese culture and history, for their disrespect of historical figures like Yasuke and their insults to their audience. Show that people from around the world of different backgrounds, cultures, races, religions, and political beliefs will not stand for this and are willing to boycott this game.
