Living near Friends For Mental Health and being neurodivergent, the idea of Puppy Yoga struck me as delightful and supportive. However, it also raises serious concerns about the welfare and sourcing of the puppies involved. I am deeply worried about the lack of regulation surrounding breeders, many of whom operate unethically through puppy mills and backyard breeding. Such practices not only exploit animals but also go against my values and beliefs. The promotion of Puppy Yoga, while charming, could inadvertently contribute to unethical breeding practices if the puppies are sourced without stringent checks and balances.  While these puppies are over 8 weeks of age and vetted, they are from a breeder.  The thought of homeless dogs being overlooked while new litters are bred is disheartening. It is crucial to consider the larger impact on animal welfare and act responsibly.  

Friends For Mental Health initially called shelters and rescues, who all refused to participate in puppy yoga due to animal welfare concerns.  The shelters all said that puppy yoga, while calming for humans, is stressful for dogs.  Friends For Mental Health should have cancelled the animal portion of the event, yet they instead got puppies from breeders for this event.

It is worth noting that puppy yoga is illegal in Italy  due to welfare concerns.  

With a collective effort, we can create a mutually beneficial environment where Yoga can thrive while promoting a strong message against animal exploitation. Let us advocate for more responsible sourcing practices that support animal welfare and make a significant difference in the lives of dogs who desperately need homes.

I urge the organizers of Puppy Yoga, Friends For Mental Health, and similar events to adopt this ethical approach by no longer using animals, unless they are from rescues or are the participants companions.  Please join me in demanding change by signing this petition to ensure that the joys of Yoga are not tainted by unethical practices. Je me permets de vous écrire avec beaucoup de respect pour votre cause, qui est profondément importante et nécessaire. Le travail que vous faites pour la santé mentale mérite d’être soutenu et reconnu.

Cependant, je souhaite exprimer une préoccupation concernant votre événement de levée de fonds « Puppy Yoga ». Plus précisément, je me questionne sur la provenance des chiots utilisés lors de cette activité.

Si ces chiots proviennent d’élevages ou de reproduction, cela soulève un enjeu éthique important. Dans plusieurs pays, le concept de « puppy yoga » a d’ailleurs été remis en question, voire interdit, en raison des préoccupations liées au bien-être animal. Plusieurs experts soulignent que ce type d’activité peut être en contradiction avec les principes mêmes du yoga, qui prônent le respect, la bienveillance et l’harmonie avec les êtres vivants.

Au-delà de cela, il est aussi important de considérer le contexte actuel de surpopulation animale. De nombreuses organisations de protection animale s’efforcent déjà de répondre à des besoins urgents, et certaines initiatives commerciales autour des chiots peuvent, malgré de bonnes intentions, contribuer indirectement à une industrie très lucrative dont les pratiques sont parfois préoccupantes.

Je suis convaincue qu’il est possible de concilier votre mission avec des approches alignées sur le bien-être animal — par exemple en collaborant avec des refuges ou en mettant de l’avant l’adoption responsable.

Merci de prendre le temps de considérer cette réflexion. Elle est partagée avec sincérité, dans un esprit de dialogue et de cohérence entre des causes qui, au fond, visent toutes le mieux-être.
