The Wesean Student Federation expresses its profound concern and strong condemnation regarding a recent claim published in National Geographic. The article in question inaccurately asserts that Assam is predominantly inhabited by Hindu Bengalis, calling the Ahoms and Bodos outsiders in their land.

We view this portrayal as a gross distortion of Assam's rich and diverse history. Such a narrative undermines the cultural and historical significance of the indigenous communities of Assam, who have been the true custodians of the region for centuries. The Assamese identity is a vibrant mosaic, enriched by the contributions of various indigenous groups, including the Ahoms, Bodos, and many other ethnic communities, each with their distinct heritage and traditions.

It is important to note that the migration of Bengalis to Assam is a relatively recent event. Historically, there were no major regions in Assam inhabited by Bengalis. Instead, it was the native communities who were the first to walk on this land, each contributing to its rich culture and bestowing it with various names reflecting their heritage.

The claim made in the article misrepresents the demographic and cultural fabric of Assam and risks sowing discord and misunderstanding among its people. A reputable publication like National Geographic must ensure that its content is accurate, well-researched, and respectful of the sensitivities of the regions it covers. We are particularly disheartened because National Geographic is a globally recognised organisation known for its comprehensive and meticulous reporting. An article that spreads false information about a region that is not well-known to the world can lead to widespread misconceptions and hurt the sentiments of the native population. Such a respected entity needs to conduct thorough research before making claims that could potentially harm the social and cultural fabric of a region.

The Wesean Student Federation strongly condemns the dissemination of such misleading narratives. The true indigenous people of Assam are being marginalised and discriminated against by such false portrayals. We urge National Geographic to rectify this error by issuing a correction and providing a more accurate representation of Assam's diverse and harmonious cultural landscape. Acknowledging and honouring the rightful place of indigenous communities in their homeland is essential for preserving Assam's true history and identity.

Until this issue is addressed and corrected, the Wesean Student Federation calls for the boycott of National Geographic shows and magazines. We believe that taking this stand is necessary to emphasise the importance of accurate and respectful representation of all regions and communities.
