Boycott FedEx Until It Stops Transporting Racehorses in the U.S.
The Issue
Racehorses die on the daily throughout the U.S. racing circuit. In California alone, there have been 83 Horse Deaths reported by the CA Horse Racing Board, up 34% from 2022, 27 of these at Santa Anita Park in Southern CA, up from 14 in 2022 - a 93% increase in Horse Deaths at Santa Anita this year; 20 at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, a 54% increase over 2022.
Racehorses are trafficked all around the U.S. to feed gambling addiction, from New York to California, California to Kentucky, Kentucky to Florida, Florida to California ...
Shipping horses increases their risk for disease and injury:
- "Shipping fever is a well-described pulmonary disorder appearing in animals shipped long distances. If left untreated, cases of this pneumonia type can become severe enough to require hospitalization and even endanger a horse's life." https://aaep.org/horsehealth/preventing-shipping-fever#:~:text=Shipping%20fever%20is%20a%20well,even%20endanger%20a%20horse's%20life
- "travel appears to increase the risks of laminitis, muscular problems, and gastric ulcers" https://thehorse.com/1106496/expert-transport-is-an-equine-welfare-issue/
- "Stress makes the immune system less effective in fighting diseases, so horses enduring the stress of transport are more susceptible to infections, said Padalino. Her earlier studies have also shown that travel makes horses more likely to spread disease to others." https://thehorse.com/1106496/expert-transport-is-an-equine-welfare-issue/
FedEx is now the only major air carrier that transports horses in the U.S. We can sharply curtail the horse racing industry in the U.S. by ending the air transport of racehorses here. Particularly in California, which is "often referred to as an 'island' because it is so far away from most other comparable racing." https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-25/santa-anita-fedex-horse-shipping-shutdown
BOYCOTT FedEx until it stops transporting racehorses! NOW is the time to do this, as California racing is once more contracting with Golden Gate Fields set to close permanently in June 2024.
“'If we lose Santa Anita, our sport changes for the whole country. I think Del Mar would survive, but I don’t know if it’s enough to keep the breeding business going in California. The state is very, very vital for the future of racing to be successful.'” Tom Rooney, President & CEO, National Thoroughbred Racing Assn. https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-24/california-racing-future
