As an animal rescuer and a deeply concerned citizen, I am appalled by the unacceptable treatment of animals, particularly lions, at Baluarte Zoo in Vigan, Philippines. These majestic creatures, who have every right to exist and thrive in this world as we do, are sadly forced into dire conditions marked by mismanagement and abuse. Chronic underfeeding and poor sanitation are disturbingly routine, clearly violating global standards for animal welfare.

It is incumbent upon us as compassionate individuals and responsible citizens to demand an immediate end to this gross inhumanness. Instead of attractions, these animals should be regarded as sentient beings deserving respect and sanctuary.

Furthermore, documented cases of animal abuse in zoos worldwide reveal a horrifying trend that cannot be ignored. The World Animal Protection reported in 2014 that up to 75% of the 1.1 million animals living in zoos worldwide are being mistreated.

This petition is a plea to Philippine governmental agencies, specifically the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, to intervene and hold Baluarte Zoo accountable for their mismanagement. Insist on better living conditions for the animals, including well-balanced diets, clean habitats, and dedicated veterinary care, not mentioning that they also need a family care, and not getting hurt by your caretakers. It is high time we put an end to the cruel treatment of animals in our zoos and work towards creating environments where they can live with respect and dignity.
