Stop the construction of docks at The Cape on Bowen Island

The Issue

Bowen Island needs your help. One of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse places in Howe Sound is Cape Roger Curtis, now known as The Cape. This majestic spot overlooks Vancouver to the East, the Straight of Georgia with Vancouver Island in the distance, Pasley and Whorlcombe Islands to the West, the Sunshine Coast and up towards the Squamish Mountains to the North. Its scenic beauty is outshined only by its abundance of nature and wildlife.

Up until a couple of years ago this area was an unofficial park full of Arbutus forest and hiking trails. The area is now sadly developed, with multi-million dollar 10 acre lots. The developer was kind enough to include a shoreline trail along the coast so everyone could enjoy this magical spot. But the destruction is not over. The owners and owner-developers of the properties are now installing docks. This area has some of the most amazing tide pools and shoreline life of anywhere on the island... countless species of water fowl, eagles, seals, orcas, fish and invertebrates call this spot home. I am so deeply saddened that such a beautiful spot is being ruined so a few wealthy individuals can park their yachts at their 'summer cabins'.

Local islanders have been fighting the docks for nearly a year with very little interest from local government. The docks are huge, unattractive and are being built in some of the roughest waters around the island requiring additional breakwaters. Stand up with us to protect this place that belongs to everyone. Help protect the little things because if we can't then what hope do we have of protecting the big things? Show our local government that there is more ecological and tourism value in this place than they give it credit for.

The dock at Lot 13 is visible in the background. One of the six proposed private docks (Lot 15) has been granted a water licence tenure that extends over 100 metres into this orca habitat.
