David Tieu started this petition to Boulevard Gardens Coop Board

It has come to many resident’s attention that Boulevard Gardens has begun using TruGreen to apply pesticides and fertilizer treatments to the grass areas. As per New York State, OSHA they are required to notify residents with ample time and when and where this is to be done. Many buildings did not have the posted notice and nowhere was it available in the resident portal of our website or any social media pages. While TruGreen claims that the pesticides it uses are not harmful to human health, the current scientific evidence indicates otherwise. The chemicals used

  • Prodiamine
  • 2,4-D
  • R-2-propionic acid
  • 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid

Are all considered likely carcinogens by the International Agency on Cancer Research (IACR), meaning that they likely cause cancer in human beings. 2,4-D specifically has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Other health effects have also been documented, including immunosuppression(suppression of the immune system), reproductive harm, Parkinson’s disease and hyperthyroidism.

While the Board claims that these chemicals are diluted before being applied, studies have indicated that even small amounts of these chemicals can cause serious and irreversible health effects. The common chemical industry motto is that “the dose makes the poison,” in other words, exposure is only harmful at a certain threshold level value, yet more recent research has indicated that this is not the case, and that exposure is harmful, especially to the developing bodies of children, at any dose.

Furthermore, while application is supposedly limited to the grass areas, chemical drift— the migration of pesticides on the wind— is common with spray application pesticides and often results in inadvertent exposure to those living in the immediate area. Many residents have mentioned that they have smelled chemicals during and post application.

We all would like healthy looking grass here at Boulevard Gardens, but we do not agree that the serious health risks posed by the use of these chemicals are worth it. As more research on the long-term and irreversible health effects of exposure to these chemicals becomes available more municipalities have begun to ban their use, the New York City Council recently banned the use of pesticides in all public property.

There are other solutions to getting rid of weeds besides the spraying of large quantities of industrial chemicals. We ask the board to consider these.
