Tell Boulder City Council: Let Bedrooms Be For People!

The Issue

***IMPORTANT NOTICE*** While we appreciate the support from places far and wide, we are asking that ONLY BOULDER VOTERS sign this petition. Thank you!

In most of Boulder, it is currently illegal for more than three unrelated people to live together (in some specific areas, the limit is four). This means in most of the city, it is illegal for four unrelated people to live together in a four-bedroom house. It doesn't matter how big the house is or what age the residents are.

The current occupancy laws are oppressive and unjust, and simply do not reflect our community’s environmental, economic, and social values.

But we have the power to do something about this. With your help, we intend to pass a ballot measure to improve equality and affordability, reduce our environmental impact, and revise an arbitrary and antiquated law.

Instead of only allowing three unrelated people to live together, we believe in a simple, common-sense change: allow at least one person to live in each bedroom of a home. After all, bedrooms are for people.

Our Approved Ballot Language States:

Shall the City of Boulder Charter be amended to allow all housing units to be occupied by a number of people equal to the number of bedrooms plus one, and allow housing units with fewer than four bedrooms to have four people, and in all cases shall relevant International Building and Residential code limits apply?

To put it simply, our initiative would make it so that if you lived in a three-bedroom house, four people would be allowed to live there together. If you lived in a four-bedroom house, five people would be allowed to live together. Etcetera.

Boulder’s occupancy laws create a financial burden for many, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our community. In this time of crisis, it is especially important that individuals feel safe and secure in their housing situation. With some modest changes to our archaic occupancy laws, we could help ensure increased housing stability for everyone, including those who need it most.

Democracy is not dead. While we are no longer able to physically collect signatures to get our initiative on the November ballot, the Boulder City Council has indicated they could put our initiative on the ballot ONLY if we show enough community support.

We need your help to get more signatures online! We can ONLY make this important change with your help, so please sign the petition, share on social media, and email/text your friends to build the support we need.
