Following the release of the Hillard Heintze report on racial bias in policing in Boulder, the Boulder Police Department responded with plans (in February of 2016) to implement recommendations made in the report. Many of the recommendations were to be implemented in the range of six to nine months, meaning that Boulder residents should expect that the City has made significant progress at this point. We, Showing Up for Racial Justice - Boulder and engaged members of our community, are requesting that City Council and BPD present a status report and take questions from the public at a City Council meeting by September 2016. We request that you address the progress made on each of the 12 recommendations, stating what remains to be completed, as well as a timeline for completing each recommendation.
We’re particularly interested in hearing about the progress made on collecting demographic information for all traffic stops and points of contact, and updates in the process of recruiting for a Professional Standards Review Panel. What progress has been made on creating a Community Advisory Panel?
Thank you to City Council and the Police Chief for your time. We look forward to hearing about the steps you’ve taken to acknowledge the police department’s shortcomings and make Boulder a more racially just and inclusive place to live.
