The JP Rocketeers model rocketry club was founded last year to offer a unique and engaging STEM learning experience for neighborhood kids and young adults. Model rocketry is an established and well-respected hobby that has been in existence since the 1950s. The NAR (National Association of Rocketry) has developed guidelines that, if followed, ensure a safe launching experience. Model rockets are made of safe, lightweight materials, and the engines are manufactured to exacting standards.

The JP Rocketeers applied for a permit with the Boston Parks Department last year to hold a launch at Millennium Park in West Roxbury, an ideal location in many respects, and was told that model rocketry is not permitted at Boston Parks. We would like to request, with the support of Councilors Matt O'Malley and Annissa Essaibi-George, that the Parks Department consider granting our club a special permit to launch at Millennium or some other convenient Boston park. Without a local field for launching, our club is unlikely to survive, much less thrive.

Numerous model rocketry clubs, recognized and supported by the NAR, exist across the country (including urban areas), offering a one-of-a-kind learning experience. The potential for collaborating with local schools and educators is great. We believe our club offers enormous potential for education and community-building at a time when both are sorely needed. Thank you for your support!
