The Issue

Urgent news has shaken our community: A homeless shelter with over 80 rooms is being planned for the heart of our beloved neighborhood, at 10th Avenue and 50th Street (5001-10th Ave and 1016-50th St). In response, BoroPark24 has launched this petition to give our community a voice and demand action.

We, the undersigned residents of Boro Park, stand united in unwavering opposition to this proposal. While we recognize the need to support those who are struggling, forcing such a large facility into the core of our peaceful, family-centered community raises serious concerns - threatening our safety, overwhelming local resources, and disrupting the very fabric of our neighborhood.

What could be more compelling than the fact that a recent poll on BoroPark24 revealed a staggering 97% of respondents oppose the proposed homeless shelter?

Boro Park is a tightly woven community, built on trust, tradition, and security. Our streets are filled with families, bustling businesses, and vibrant schools - this shelter would put all of that at risk. Our neighborhood has some of the lowest homelessness rates in the city. Why should our community be forced to carry a burden it doesn’t need - or deserve? Were any of us consulted before this life-altering decision was made?

The proposed location is alarmingly close to vital community institutions, including our local hospital where there are constant visitors, and a rehab center with many elderly patients and frequent visitors. Additionally, the lack of proper notification about this proposal to the residents is deeply troubling. No one in the community was properly informed or consulted about such a significant decision that will affect our lives and our safety and could forever change the character of our streets.

We demand that city officials reconsider this misguided plan and seek out alternative locations - ones that are better equipped to provide support without sacrificing the safety and stability of a thriving, peaceful neighborhood.

We stand strong and determined, to protect the safety, security, and future of Boro Park. This is our home - and together, we say NO to this shelter.
