This week Matt Hancock gave evidence to the Covid-19 Inquiry about one of the greatest scandals of the global pandemic - his failure to protect care home residents and carers, who ended up being preferentially infected by Covid-19, while the less vulnerable populations had lower infection rates, in what expert witness to the Inquiry Professor Alisdair Donaldson has called ‘generational slaughter’.
Following pressure from our campaign, the lawyers representing bereaved families were given half an hour to question Hancock, which was enough to expose the lies and motivations behind the betrayal of our loved ones in the care sector. When he went on national television to tell the worried public that he had thrown a protective ring around care homes, it became apparent under our lawyer’s questioning that he was in fact discharging with out testing patients from hospitals into care homes that didn’t have the PPE, oxygen or space to keep their workers of their residents safe.
Realising he was backed into a corner, Hancock lashed out at the very families whose loved ones he let down, claiming that ‘only campaign groups’ care about his lies. You can watch the clip here. He only came under this pressure because we managed to force the Inquiry to let our lawyers question him. Every single win like this is hard won, and it makes a difference to our future safety.
We will be continuing our fight for truth, justice and action for as long as it takes - whether that means taking out criminal charges or forcing the government to implement the Inquiry’s recommendations. We need your help to show the likes of Hancock that the public does care about generational slaughter, about lies and abuses of power, and corruption.
