Test care home staff for COVID-19 as a priority

Test care home staff for COVID-19 as a priority
The Issue
Care homes are a safe space for some of the most vulnerable in our communities, and they are now being faced with a very difficult situation due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Homes are working hard and doing all they can to protect both staff and residents, but they need help.
Due to limited PPE (personal protective equipment), shortages for medical equipment such as thermometers, and a need to provide care for residents who are dependant on it resulting in clear challenges if self-isolation is needed for a resident, we need to be able to at least ensure they are listed as a priority to be tested so they can continue to do their best to keep the homes a safe environment.
If a staff member develops a cough or minor symptoms, but isn't sure whether it's COVID-19 or not, with homes being pushed for resources as it is, it's crucial that they know whether they can safely work with vulnerable people - can they continue to come to work or do they need to isolate? This is a really important distinction!
It is encouraging to see that tests are now becoming available for NHS staff, including certain drive-through test centres.
Is there a way we can offer the same to care homes and their staff?
My mum is a manager of a care home and is working overtime to ensure all their needs are met during this challenging time. For her and many other managers and staff members, the least we can do to thank them for their selfless duty is to provide them testing facilities.
And the residents and relatives deserve the peace of mind, too.
Please sign & share, and support our care homes to continue protecting the vulnerable.
