Save Our Statues

The Issue

My name is Baden Powell. Once upon a time, I launched the Scouting Association. Today, there are 54 million members worldwide. I used to be thought of as someone who had done a good thing - and they put up this statue to me. Now, along with other statues around the country, I'm being vilified by a minority of people. Please back this petition to keep me, and other former significant Britons, on our pedestals.

No other country’s history is as rich and varied as that of the UK. We are the result of our history, both good and bad. By knowing our history, we understand how we came to be the country we are today. So the removal of historic statues across the country not only panders to the will of a few, it also airbrushes our history and undermines the sense of who we are.
We believe that historic statues of people such as Francis Drake, Robert Peel and Captain Cook bear testimony to our rich heritage and that to remove them is both offensive and promotes divisions in society.

In addition, calls for the removal of such statues are ill-considered as little thought has been given to where such a process ends, or who the arbiters of such removals would be.

We call on central and local government to resist such misguided moves. Please sign and share this petition and help us to put pressure on the decision-makers.
