The Issue

England is one of the least biodiverse countries in the world, with forest cover accounting for only 10% of the overall landmass (Forest Research, 2021).

This means that not only is the country’s native wildlife severely depleted (part of the Sixth Mass Extinction), but the lack of plant cover, and continued urbanisation of land is actively adding to the rising greenhouse gas emissions fuelling the climate crisis.

There are only five to ten years left to prevent global warming of over 2°C (IPCC, 2021) and catastrophic climate casualties globally, including in England. In the past year alone, there have been several unprecedented weather events, the most recent being Storm Arwen; “one of the most powerful and damaging winter storms of the latest decade.” (Met Office, 2021). These weather events are only set to increase in frequency and power unless we act NOW!

Rewilding Brownfield and Common Land in England is an effective way of mitigating against the continued increase of greenhouse gas emissions as well as encouraging the return of struggling native wildlife.

All over England, Brownfield sites are standing empty, awaiting development and further urbanisation. But we have the opportunity to act now and invest in the natural world - allowing areas that have been allowed to go to waste to become thriving, natural ecosystems once again.

Sign this petition and tell Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Secretary for the Environment George Eustice to invest in our natural world and ACT NOW to Rewild All Brownfield and Common Land in England.
