Return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece

The Issue

“The Parthenon Marbles” refers to the iconic collection of Classical Greek Marble Sculptures which formed part of the Temple of Parthenon, the Propylea and Erechtheum, located in the staggering Acropolis of Athens.

In 1802 while Athens was occupied by the Ottoman Empire, Lord Elgin who was the British ambassador in Greece at the time instructed his agents to violently torn out the sculptures from the temple’s frieze under the defence of rescuing them. They have then been transferred by sea to Britain forming now a significant part of the British Museum, based on a said decree which was issued to Elgin at the time by the Ottoman empire as the governor, yet never found in the archives.

The Marbles were removed under the excuse of rescuing an indisputable international culture yet the persistence 200 years afterwards in retaining them as part of a concept of a universal museum rather than returning to where they belong raises suspicions of seizure rather than rescue.

The marbles comprise of 192 soldiers, equivalent to the deaths under the Battle of Marathon, and personified the greatest civilization the world has seen. A battle taking place for the whole world to enjoy now the paramount virtues of arts, sciences, philosophy and democracy.

Britain's arrogant acquisition has persisted through the years for protecting them in a world-class museum, yet the NEW Acropolis Museum creates a fresh call for the reunification of the Marbles of Parthenon, in an equally First-class museum.

It is therefore of utmost significance to RETURN THE PARTHENON MARBLES NOW as it can only suffice for the bare minimum in repaying the debt for demolishing the structure of Parthenon.

When it comes to Morality, Britain shall not impose a double standard and in respect of the Diversity within national boundaries, it is now time to prove the respect of Diversity transnationally in allowing each country to retain their very own culture and identify on the land it has first been born.

Therefore, sign this petition and help in repaying the bare minimum to Greece, by Reunifying the supreme symbol of nobility, “The Marbles of Parthenon”.
