At the time of writing, it has been 103 days since my business has been forced to close. 103 days since every other business in the beauty, spa and wellbeing industry has been forced to close. That's over 30,000 businesses of whom employ over 120,000 people.

Of course, this has been necessary to control the Coronavirus epidemic that we have all been faced with. HOWEVER; I now do not agree with the government's announcement on 23 June that beauty, spa and wellbeing are to remain CLOSED whilst they do allow Hairdressers, Barbers, Pubs, Hotels, Restaurants, Theme Parks, Theatres, Concert Halls and more to open from 4 July.

I do not understand how a trip with friends to the local pub with no PPE is deemed safer or more 'essential' than a 1-1 appointment in a controlled beauty salon, clinic or spa environment. As beauty professionals we are QUALIFIED in all aspects of health and hygiene and are used to wearing PPE on an everyday basis ensuring to always protect ourselves and our clients.

My business, as well as many others had put COVID-19 protocols in place way before the guidelines for close contact services were released and our protocols are FAR stronger and more in-depth than what is required. We are going ABOVE & BEYOND to ensure the safety of our staff and that of our clients.

These extra measures have of course been incredibly costly (ppe, equipment, tools, marketing and more) and whilst we are exceptionally grateful for the governments initial help with the grant that we were lucky to receive (I know others sadly not so lucky) and of course the furlough scheme which has kept our employees jobs safe so far. Our fixed costs have not disappeared! Everyday our businesses are still costing us money to run and we are receiving VERY LITTLE to ZERO income! Not forgetting that of course like myself, a directors of a company hasn't been entitled to a penny throughout. As of course we cannot be furloughed, we have to remain working in order to do everything we can to help our businesses survive! So our very minimum wage has also had to be deducted from the business grant in order to be able to continue running our household for our families.

On top of this, on July 1 our entire industry was made a mockery of in a one minute exchange during PMQ's with the prime minister and William Wragg, MP for Hazel Grove.

It is safe to say that I think I speak for every single person in the beauty, spa and wellbeing industry by saying that we feel completely undervalued and degraded by the recent actions of our government.

We URGENTLY at least need clarity on when we will be able to restart our operations.

I established my business, Essential Beauty, back in 2011 when I was just 20 years old, working alone in a single treatment room within a local gym. Nearly a decade later and I remain the sole owner of my company and employ 14 members of staff including beauty therapist apprentices, senior beauty specialists and front of house team. Like most independent businesses, my business is not just a place of work for me this is my passion that I have worked so incredibly hard to achieve over the last nine and a half years.

We are an exceptionally busy salon. We have now been closed for over 14 weeks, based on 2019 figures during this time we provided a service for 3538 clients. 3157 of those clients, are regular clients who we have built fantastic relationships with and who regularly visit our salon for services.

I am urgently seeking your support to get this petition to parliament for the attention of the prime minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP to support our sector and urgently take steps to open up the industry.

Over 120,000 people's profession, reputation and over 30,000 businesses are at stake. The action of reopening these businesses is not from a profit perspective, it’s survival. Let us serve the wellbeing of our employees and clients – please provide a definitive date for when the beauty industry can reopen.
