Selective Mutism is a Disability that causes those with it to unwillingly lose the ability to speak in certain situations.

Though many think Selective Mutes are choosing not to speak - it is NEVER a choice. It doesn’t help that there is little information about the condition, and It’s misleading name does not help either.

Selective Mutes are capable of speech and can talk confidently and freely in places and with people in which they are comfortable. 

It all depends on the situation. For example; meeting someone new, giving a presentation, ordering a meal - may all cause a Selective Mute to struggle.

This is why I believe it’s important for the condition to be recognised as ‘Situational Mutism’ (‘Sit Mute/Mutism’ for short) instead - because it is never a choice to not speak.

Renaming would allow others to gain a better understanding, meaning they would be more aware of the struggles Selective Mutes face - thus allowing them to communicate with them in other ways such as writing or Art, rather than just assume they are being rude or ignoring you.

Selective/Situational Mutes are People who have a lot to say. Let their Voices be heard✨
