Imagine living every hour of your life by the clock. Imagine not being able to leave your house because you cannot leave your loved one alone. You just want a break. You just want someone to talk to. You want a break from spoon-feeding your loved one, from washing their bed linen, from administering their medication. You do this because you love them and no nursing home in this land can provide your loved one with the same degree of care and safety that you can at home. This is the life of a carer.
There is a severe lack of funding for Dementia and Alzheimers Care. Across the country people are struggling to find appropriate and affordable care for their loved ones and respite for carers that are often loved ones.
Everyday the Alzheimers organisation are contacted by people with dementia and their families who are struggling to access the care they need. They experience stress, anguish and exhaustion in fighting for appropriate support.
For too long the dementia care crisis has been hidden behind closed doors, lived by people who rarely have opportunities to be heard. With typical costs of dementia care at £100,000, life savings are swallowed up and family homes are eventually sold. The current care system is in crisis. People are dying without dignity, huddled in inadequately equipped nursing homes with insufficient resource to provide 1:1 care.
My mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers at 57yrs old. Our battle to navigate around the NHS/Social Care minefield has lasted almost 15 yrs. We are exhausted. We have recently been advised that they want to remove my mother from her home and force her into a nursing home where her life expectancy would be very short. Some may think that it doesn't matter as there is no quality to life now at final stage Alzheimers. We refuse to let this happen. She deserves to live the remainder of her life in dignity in the safety of her home with her family and carers around her. She worked her entire life and contributed so that should ill health happen she would get the care she is entitled to.
Dementia can devastate lives. People affected are so busy coping with the condition ,they shouldn’t have to fight the system too. We need to see leadership to urgently address these challenges – so that care is good quality, easy to access, affordable and available in your home if that is your preferred choice for your loved one. Carers need support. They need respite. They are grieving for those alive and fighting a battle they should not be having to fight.
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that's one every three minutes.
Please support me in taking this to government.
Alzheimers Kills. Caring Kills.
