Munira Mirza should not be chosen to set up the UK Race Equality Commision.
The Issue
Munira Mirza doubts the existence of institutional racism, calling it "a perception more than a reality." It is therefore, difficult to have any confidence in policy recommendations from someone who denies the existence of the very structures that produce the social inequalities experienced by black communities. Munira Mirza should not be chosen to set up the UK Race Inequality Commission.
It is imperative that black communities have a substantial representation on the commission. The commission should be setup by an expert on racism and the history of colonial exploitation during the British Empire and its legacy in the modern era.
