Make the CARBOHYDRATE COUNT for food in restaurants and bakeries readily available.
The Issue
While I realise it is important that people who suffer with food intolerances get the correct information about the food they are consuming, it would be of great value to a diabetic to be able to ask at restaurants and in store bakeries for the carbohydrate content of the product.
As a recent convert to insulin pump treatment I am no longer able to enjoy products from my local supermarket bakery or have to be very choosy about where I eat out because the information needed to deliver accurate amounts of life saving medication isn’t available upon request.
Weatherspoons used to print out a full information leaflet, but don’t anymore as far as Im aware. I emailed One of the large supermarkets with regards to their bakery products. They replied saying that they had passed it on to their Quality Assurance team, but I have still heard nothing. Calorie information is readily available as is allergens (rightly so) but not the critical information a Diabetic needs to keep the life threatening disease stable. If you guess how much insulin to take, it isn’t pleasant under calculating but it is fixable, however if you over estimate, this will lead to a hypoglycaemic attack which could lead to hospitalisation or have fatal consequences.
