Arnie Wickramasuriya started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

My aim with this petition is to make it a legal requirement for ALL documents asking about gender to include ‘they/them’ and an ‘other’ option for every individual to be able to specify their pronouns from the start. This will make it easier on the individuals and prevents problems further down the line.

A lot of people suffer with gender dysphoria. This is a term that describes a sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity. This sense of unease or dissatisfaction may be so intense it can lead to depression and anxiety and have a harmful impact on daily life.

It can take a person a long time to come to terms with their gender identity and coming out for many people can be an incredibly terrifying experience. Many people find that stating their pronouns is very difficult as so many people are not accepting of the fact that ‘she/her’ and ‘he/him’ are not the only pronouns used to identify ones gender.

The most common alternative pronouns are ‘they/them’ however there are multiple alternatives and it depends on the persons personal decision as to which pronouns they use. I would also like to make this extremely clear: the pronouns someone chooses to use are NOT their ‘preferred’ pronouns. They are their pronouns and it is MANDATORY to use these pronouns when addressing, or talking about that person.

This will make it easier for those within the genderqueer and transgender community to express themselves and takes a lot of pressure off them, therefore helping many people struggling with their mental health and giving them a sense of being accepted. No ones pronouns should determine how you judge a person.

As a member of the genderqueer community, this is a topic that is very personal and important thing to me. If this petition does not prove to be successful, i will continue to fight for this and i will take every measure i can to make this happen. To everyone out there experiencing gender dysphoria, you are not alone and we will stand together through all of this.
