Petition updateLaunch a public inquiry into the #DeniedMyVote scandalDon’t ever lose your rights to vote as an EU citizen in the UK

As we approach the end of the transition period, with or without a deal, many EU citizens fear they will be denied their vote in local elections taking place next year just as they were denied a vote in the European Parliament elections in 2019.

This is emphatically not the case! UK legislation does not say EU citizens have the right to vote for as long as the UK is in the EU.

In fact UK law states that EU citizens have the right to vote in the following elections:

  • All local elections
  • Mayoral elections
  • Elections for the London Assembly and Mayor
  • Elections for the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies
  • Elections for Police Commissioners
  • Elections for the Scottish Parliament

The #DeniedMyVote scandal in 2019 showed the British government's intent:  to suppress the vote of groups thought to be hostile to them, in this case EU citizens who may feel aggrieved because of Brexit.

That is no way to run a democracy.

Imagine what will happen to EU citizens' right to vote in other elections if we don't draw the line at what happened at the European elections.

On 8 and 9 December, the #DeniedMyVote challenge will be heard in the administrative court.

We wish the petitioners well with the challenge, but whatever the outcome we are determined to continue the political campaign to defend all the current rights of EU citizens to vote in the UK.

Can you help by chipping in £5, £10, £25 or what you can afford to our campaign?
