Petition updateLaunch a public inquiry into the #DeniedMyVote scandalDenied my vote - and its not just about coronavirus

First of all, our thoughts are with everyone who is suffering directly or indirectly as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Read our statement about the crisis

Secondly, at a time like this, it is more important than ever to be vigilant about our democratic rights and freedoms.

The Government has postponed the local elections including elections to the London Assembly and for the London Mayor by one year.

But will EU citizens still be able to vote in these elections in 2021?

In a letter to the Government, New Europeans Board Member and former councillor, Michal Siewniak asked precisely that question.

French polls - a reminder of post Brexit voting limbo

The reply was not encouraging - it will depend on the kinds of bilateral agreements the government achieves with other member states.

We believe that the Government should guarantee the rights of EU citizens to vote and stand in local elections unilaterally.

It is only thanks to our broad based membership that we are able to have such an impact in bringing abuses of democratic rights to public attention such as the #DeniedMyVote scandal of 2019.
