We are delighted to confirm that Lyn Brown MP has won a debate in parliament on #DeniedMyVote.
We have been working with Lyn throughout the summer and all being well the debate will take place at the House of Commons (in Westminster Hall) from 2.30pm on Wed. 11 September.
Can you chip in £5, £10, £25 to support the campaign?
The title of the debate is: ‘Disenfranchisement of EU27 citizens in the UK and British overseas voters from the European elections in 2019.’
Parliamentary calendar for Wed., 11 September
The debate gives us a great opportunity to hold the government to account for the systematic and in our view deliberate way it denied over 1 million EU citizens and Britons abroad a vote in the European elections.
Although the government has said it will shut down parliament next week it is not clear that this will take place on Monday.
If parliament is not prorogued until Wednesday or Thursday, then our #DeniedMyVote debate will take place.
We are working closely with Lyn Brown MP's office to prepare for the debate and to brief other MPs who may take part.
Lyn has taken the case up in response to representations from New Europeans through her constituent Else Kvist.
In a blog for the New Europeans website, Else has written about how the Brexit vote has changed her relationship with the UK
For the first time in 27 years living in the UK, Else was denied a vote in the European elections this May.
As part of our preparations for the debate we are asking supporters to write in with stories about how you were affected by #DeniedMyVote.
Perhaps you are an EU citizen in the UK who did not receive an UC1 form in time - or a British voter living in continental Europe who did not receive your postal ballot in time?
If so, please write in to let us know and we will try to make sure that your case is raised in the debate alongside others like it.
You can write to us at bureau@neweuropeans.net
We are only able to continue to campaign at this level and with this intensity thanks to the contributions you have been making to our campaign appeal.
It is vitally important that we step up the campaign in the light of the chance to have the debate in Westminster.
If the Government denies us our debate, as it has denied us our vote, by shutting down parliament before it can take place, we will have even more cause for protest.
In those circumstances, we would look to hold the debate in another location subject to the success of our appeal and to step up the pressure in other ways.
Please chip in whatever you can to help on the link below.
