Give people their vote back in Chorley.

Give them a choice and give them a voice.

Currently due to convention the Speaker is unchallenged by the main parties so they can hold their MP role. In 2019 people of the UK should have the right to choose who they want to run their council and their country. The covenant must be abolished. 

In my constituency of Chorley the seat has always been contested by the 3 main parties and then a mix of the greens, Brexit party and independents. 2019 is one of the most significant general elections in recent history due to the fact that the future government will have a huge influence on Brexit. Currently there will not be any representative from the 3 main parties and the Brexit Party to an archaic covenant.

People of Chorley are been denied a meaningful, democratic choice when it comes to voting. The Speaker does not represent a political party, has no policies and is unable to vote in the House of Commons.

I propose that the Speaker take the role on as 'The Speaker' voted by the Commons then allowing the people of Chorley to have a choice from a range of parties who can contest the seat and the winner can fully concentrate on delivering their manifesto to the people of Chorley. 

This tradition will continue unless pressure is applied for it to be abolished. The petition is not about political persuasion, it's not about the Speaker personally or the things they have achieved in the past. It's about people having a meaningful democratic choice they have had for over a hundred years. This affects us, it's affected people in the past and will affect the voters of the future.
