Electric car charging points blocked by ICE cars

The Issue

The electric car charging infrastructure in the UK is under increasing demand as more and more drivers switch their cars from petrol and diesel to full electric in support of emerging Government guidelines and environmental policies.

As well as Increasing the capability and scope of the charging infrastructure across the UK, especially in the more rural areas where its currently still very poor, the Government needs to tackle the increasing problem of EV charging point blocking by ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles.

There is currently no legal deterrent to stop non EV drivers parking their ICE cars in dedicated EV charging bays, other than common sense and the embarrassment of them obviously causing an obstruction or deliberate blocking of the space needed for an EV car driver to charge their vehicle.  Most EV drivers will plan and allow for an alternative plan B charging option at a different location, but this is not always possible due to the current scope and distribution of working chargers.

The Government are requested to make it illegal to park any vehicle in a dedicated EV charging bay except for the explicit purpose of charging. Drivers of such vehicles should be liable for an on the spot fine for obstruction and the vehicle causing the obstruction could be forcibly removed if required; this penalty should include blue badge holders if they are not charging their vehicle.  Video or photographic evidence may be submitted to the police by members of the public of offenders and fines could be retrospectively applied.
