The Issue

The basic salary for a member of Parliament is £81,932 (Source https://www.parliament.uk/about/mps-and-lords/members/pay-mps/ This is far above the UK average wage. A member of Parliament is expected to perform a wide range of duties in their constituency. This includes: answering correspondence from constituents, attending parliament to vote, preparing bills and participating in public debate.

A number of "serving" M.P.'s have taken on second jobs. This includes Bromsgrove M.P., Sajid Javid; who, last year, started working at the investment bank J.P. Morgan.

Other M.P.'s that have taken on second jobs include Priti Patel and Jacob Rees-Mogg (source: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/aug/19/mps-advising-big-business-democracy-second-jobs-sajid-javid

Aside from the outright greed of taking home a salary many multiples of the average working constituent, the M.P.'s are unable to effectively perform their role as public servants. The M.P.'s are likely to be influenced in their decision making by the large firms that they are working with. They also have much less time to spend engaging with other M.P.'s and with constituents.

Sign this petition to show that M.P.'s should not be permitted to take on second jobs.
