Boost support for SB 498
The Issue
As a Master of Social Work student at Cal State San Bernardino, I am deeply committed to advancing equitable practices through education and advocacy. As part of my coursework under Dr. Frank McAlpin for SW 6062, my group and I are championing SB 498—an instrumental bill that could significantly transform the lives of indigent youth in our community.
SB 498 is a vital legislative proposal that mandates the provision of free hygiene products to indigent youth, ensuring they have unimpeded access when needed. It is unacceptable for young individuals in facilities to be denied basic personal care items, either as a form of punishment or reward. This bill also aims to eliminate hygiene-related debt altogether, which can be a burdensome and humiliating hurdle for adolescents who are just trying to manage their daily lives.
Every youth deserves to maintain their dignity and health without the fear of being denied essential items due to circumstances beyond their control. By creating a standardized protocol across all facilities, SB 498 ensures that these rights are upheld uniformly, preventing inconsistent and unfair practices.
The current lack of access to hygiene products has far-reaching consequences, including impacting the mental and physical health of youth, which in turn affects their performance in education and other activities. We should be facilitating their growth, not hindering it with unnecessary barriers. With SB 498, California can lead by example, setting a standard that prioritizes the well-being of our youth.
We stand at a pivotal moment where we can influence a policy that promises dignity, equality, and fairness for all youth. Let this be our change in the world as social workers and community advocates. Please support SB 498 by signing this petition and help us spread the word. Our collective voices can drive the change that our young people deserve. Sign the petition today and make a difference in the lives of our youth.
