Boone County is one of just a handful of counties in the state of Indiana that does not have a comprehensive Animal Control Ordinance that offers more animal protection than the Indiana Criminal Code does.

Boone County has made tremendous progress in the past several months by implementing the Animal Control Officer (ACO) position and the Animal Control Division within in the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

The ACO has full law enforcement powers and is able to issue citations and file charges under the state code. However, there are several holes in the state code and several times in which citations at the state code level are inappropriate.

The Animal Control Ordinance would provide the ACO with more options when responding to animal complaints and investigations and offer greater protection for animals within the county.
