Pandemic Pay Increase for BC Front-line Workers

This petition made change with 529 supporters!

Our front-line workers are risking their health and the health of their loved ones as they are required to work so that we can have access to the essential services that they provide. They must be adequately compensated for this.

The 7pm cheers and the discounts that businesses are offering to front-line workers are very much appreciated and shows a salute and acknowledgement that means so very much.. however we are heavily depending on these workers to show up to work, and we need to give them a reason to do so. People are at home collecting the CERB - many of who need it, but some of who do not and are reaping the benefits of it. It's a great program, however it does not benefit the front-line workers at all.. Healthcare workers are being exposed to the virus on a regular basis and are being told if they get sick they have to use vacation or unpaid leave if they have no sick days. The stress and pressure of this is overbearing and needs to be addressed.

BC currently has a healthcare pay increase for short-staffed locations, however that's to cover the shorts and does not affect all workers. Ontario recently announced a front-line pandemic pay that we would love to see in British Columbia as well. A $4 pay increase with an additional $250 lumpsum payment every month for 4 months.

This raise is not proportionate to the risk that frontline workers are taking. They interact with hundreds of people every day, handle cash, and so, their work increases their risk of exposure to the novel COVID-19.  Some of these individuals feel obligated to come into if they want to keep their jobs. They not only go home to their vulnerable children and spouses but have elderly people living with them as well. They are not only risking their own lives but anyone who they come in contact with.

The objective of this petition is to bring attention to how underpaid and undervalued these workers are during this very critical time. We call on the government to provide these workers with some sort of a Pandemic Pay.
