Justice for Preeti Rathi

The Issue

We want justice for our daughters.

There are 250 to 300 reports of acid attacks in India, with the conviction rate being ever so low.

In 2013, a 23 year old girl made her way through the busy Bandra Railway Terminus. She had just got a job in Colaba Naval Hospital INS Ashwini as a staff nurse.

What should've been a fresh new start turned out to be a nightmare for her and her family.

Preeti was attacked with acid by her stalker, Ankur Panwar, because he had proposed to Preeti but she refused. The acid caused severe damage to her lungs and she succumbed to her injuries on June 1.

This instance was the first in which a death penalty was awarded by the court in case of an acid attack.

This judgement was supposed to bring hope to the victims of such atrocities and fear to the perpetrators of such crimes. It was supposed to make a difference.

But the death penalty  was commuted to life imprisonment in 2015 by the Bombay High Court.

Six years later, her killer lives.

The fact that the killer thought Preeti was obligated to acquiesce to him simply because he asked, and that he took her life because she didn't do so exposes the shallow, misogynistic mindset of entitlement that men are raised in.

The death sentence would've marked a new beginning, a reform to uplift the many special rights given to the women of this country.

This petition proposes the Bombay High Court to reinstate its previous judgement of a death penalty to the attacker.
