On June 10, 2021 Neighborhood Associations received a phone call from the City of Boise saying the city wants to do a land swap with a developer and take away SW Boise's future 160 acre jewel park. In its place there will be housing and a 7 acre park. It later came out that the land swap is for a parcel in the foothills in North Boise
The City of Boise purchased the Murgoitio Site in the 90s with the express intention of creating a community park. This is the last true Open Space in SW Boise and it runs an entire mile between Maple Grove and Cole Rd adjacent to the New York Canal. It is has long been promised to the residents of West and SW Boise and will provide some equity to how parks and open space are dispersed around the city. The City has collected park impact fees from SW residents for nearly 30 years, funneling them to other areas of town. The City has spent millions of dollars purchasing and preserving the foothills. They have spent additional millions of dollars developing and re-modeling current parks along the river (over 12 million on Whitewater Park alone).
Let the City of Boise know that Murgoitio Park is not up for residential development or trade. SW and West Boise deserve the same access to parks and open space as other areas of the city. Besides signing the petition you can email Mayor McLean your opinion on the matter at mayormclean@cityofboise.org
