Stop dehumanizing autistic children in schools

Stop dehumanizing autistic children in schools

The Issue

I am writing in response to the mistreatment of a 10 year old autistic child in Denton, Texas. Eric Coulston, the school's resource officer pinned him to the floor by his neck and put handcuffs on him. I was deeply hurt by the way a resource officer handled a boy with autism in that fashion. The incident took place in a school by a resource officer working for the school administration. Why didn't the officer get any training on how to deal with kids that are non-neurotypical? When a child is becoming destructive, the best way to deal with this child is first of all, you as an adult, need to be calm. Do not show any sign of fear. Take the child and put the child in a sofa or comfortable chair and let him or her calm down. Let them get the steam out, the anxiety, the anxiousness that's going on at that time. Just do that. It may take 30 minutes or an hour, maybe more before the child comes back to his/her normal self. How I know, I'm a mum dealing with two autistic boys, and the little one is more anxious than the other one. He gets anxious, followed by a tantrum, with a lot of screaming to a point I feel like if he doesn't stop he might damage his vocal chords or burst something. That is why I'm starting this petition on behalf of all autistic children out there. For police officers, security guards, government officials to be aware and have them take training on how to deal with autism, to prevent dehumanizing children or adults with that condition. If you are a parent with autistic kids, or have a niece or nephew with autism, or are friends with someone who has autistic kids, let's get this petition going. I have never done a petition before; this is my first. Thank-you! And God Bless.
