Dear Supporters,
Typically Costco updates its public animal welfare page in December. This year, we are particularly eager to hear about their progress in these two areas:
- Getting their “U.S. and Canadian suppliers of fresh pork and Kirkland Signature cooler items” to utilize “group housing or confinement that permit sows to turn around.”
- Engaging with suppliers “to further reduce the number of days that breeding sows spend in confinement.”
Why is this so important? If Costco can commit to working with suppliers that have definitively reduced confinement time to nine days or less, it can position itself as a retailer whose values truly extend to how it treats animals. These pork suppliers EXIST and Costco knows about them.
We encourage Costco leaders to be transparent with their progress towards meeting these goals. This will earn them the public’s trust that the products they buy at Costco come from animals who have been treated thoughtfully and humanely.
Count on us to keep you updated!!!
