Over 200 major food companies in the US–including several of Bob Evans’ competitors–have taken steps to address the worst abuses suffered by chickens in their supply chains by adopting the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). It’s time for Bob Evans to do the same. 

The BCC is a comprehensive list of welfare measures that address the worst abuses suffered by chickens on today's farms, including:

• Being crammed with tens of thousands of other chickens, in dark, filthy windowless sheds, lying in their own waste
• Being bred to grow extremely large at a unnaturally fast rate
• Suffering from leg deformities and broken bones
• Suffering from organ failure and heart attacks
• Enduring chemical burns on their skin and in their lungs from the high levels of ammonia in the air
• And more

This is the sad reality for the millions of chickens destined for Bob Evans’ menu. And the misery doesn’t stop there. When these social, intelligent animals reach around 6 weeks old they are sent to be killed by a truly archaic and cruel process called live-shackle slaughter, where they risk being boiled alive. 

The imagery of happy animals “down on the farm” couldn’t be further from the truth. Bob Evans’ claims that “we do it right or we don’t do it”. If there is any truth in that statement then it’s time for them to step up to the plate and make good on their company’s word. It’s time for them “to do it right” by adopting the Better Chicken Commitment.
