Save the Castle Rock prairie dogs

The Issue

Colorado is about to kill more than 500 prairie dogs so they can build a mega-mall.

Wildlife conservationists are fighting to save the remaining colonies of prairie dogs which once numbered into the thousands. Alberta Development had the chance to do the right thing and relocate the animals located on the mall site but instead is choosing to exterminate them. Many of the area residents volunteered to rescue the survivors so we could relocate them to a new home where they would be safe. Now Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is refusing to let us move them to a safe refuge and they face certain extermination.

Please join me and help me save 500 of one of America’s cutest creatures. Tell Gov. Hickenlooper and  CPW Director Broscheid not to kill the remaining prairie dogs and  find them a suitable new home.

My name is Sorina Simion-Rogers and I, along with thousands of other Coloradans, am trying to save the last remaining prairie dog colonies in the area from certain death. I have called Colorado my home for 9 years, and one of the best things about living here is the wildlife, especially the prairie dogs which often enjoy watching me as much as I watch them. These animals are smart, curious and vital to our ecosystem and they shouldn’t be killed just so we can cover turn 170 acres into one of America’s largest malls.

Studies have shown that each prairie dogs colony has their own distinct language and dialect and even have different “words” for coyotes, hawks, snakes and humans. They even distinguish between the different colors of shirts people are wearing. They are an essential component of the health and biodiversity of the prairies and are considered keystone species, meaning they are essential to the balance of prairie life. The biodiversity that exists in the local ecosystem cannot remain healthy without them.

CPW should be trying to save these prairie dogs instead of allowing developers to kill them.

Please tell the CPW that you support the relocation and not the killing of the more than 500 prairie dogs. Join me, thousands of concerned Colorado citizens and organizations like PETA and the Humane Society and stand up for prairie dogs.  Ask Mr. Bob Broscheid, CPW and Governor Hickenlooper to relocate the prairie dogs from the mall site.
