Dear Supporters,
Thank you for signing our petition asking the CBE to change the name of one of their schools in consideration of the namesake's central role in establishing the Residential Schools system. As you might have heard by now, near the end of May the CBE Board announced that effective June 1st the school is to be known as "Riverside School".
While there is little doubt that painful news regarding the identification of hundreds of unmarked graves on the grounds of Residential Schools across Turtle Island was a major factor in causing the CBE Board to finally make this change, grassroots activism highlighting this particular school's former name as inappropriate was key in setting the stage. With the issue at the forefront of the public's consciousness, the Board were forced to respond with a tangible act, rather than yet another vague expression of sympathy.
While the founding issue around which the "Change L*ngevin School Group" coalesced has now been resolved, the group remains dedicated to the greater cause of justice for the Indigenous people whose lands we occupy. To reflect this, we have renamed ourselves the "Reconciliation Action Group" and will continue to act as we believe is necessary to right past and ongoing wrongs (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/cbe-school-renaming-policy-reconciliation-action-group-1.6073902 We hope we can count on your continued support.
In solidarity,
Reconciliation Action Group
