Yusuf Kalyango was suspended in 2018 after the Title IX office found that he sexually harassed multiple women. Faculty Senate committee members Dr. Robin Muhammad, Drs. Mark Franz, Sheryl House, Charles Lowery, Lauren McMills, Vladimir Marchenkov, and Yehong Shao-Lucas, voted 5-1 in favor of Kalyango keeping his tenure. Tess Herman brought her case forward in 2017 and filed a lawsuit against OU in 2019; she said it violated her civil rights by empowering Kalyango and other faculty members to abuse their power after being harassed on a school trip. That case was settled in a $90,000 settlement. "The committee neither heard nor read “clear and convincing evidence” in Herman’s case, saying her role in the investigation “crossed the line between what is appropriate and professional and can damage the integrity” of a university investigation, according to the document." Ben Peters wrote in this Athens Article: https://www.athensnews.com/news/campus/ohio-university-professor-found-by-title-ix-office-to-have-sexually-harassed-two-women-shouldn/article_90924985-cbf6-5ddf-b0f5-198f851ca19d.html

Lindsay Boyle filed her case in 2018 from events in 2011 and 2012 also on school-sponsored trips with Kalyango. Boyle admitted to lying in 2012 about the validity of her sexual misconduct allegations against Kalyango because he abused his power and made her fear she could lose her future career opportunities. The committee didn’t find her testimony convincing, saying: “it appears that her testimony was sought to build a case against Dr. Kalyango outside the normal procedures” of a Title IX investigation, according to the document, also from Ben Peters in the Athens News article.

As the Women's Panhellenic Association President, I serve as a representative for the largest group of women on Ohio University's campus. In the Panhellenic community, we stand for believing survivors and advocating for women in situations like this. As a community, we condemn the Faculty Senate's actions as they are empowering a professor who sexually harassed students to keep his tenure and continue working in a setting where future students could potentially be at risk.

We want to bring the results of this petition to the Student Senate on Wednesday, February 10th, 2021; if you're looking for more ways to help, you can email trustees@ohio.edu with how you feel about this decision.
