Reinstate Dr. Dean Winslow to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

On August 12, 2013, Dr. Dean Winslow, a respected Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases physician, Stanford Affiliated Clinical Professor and U.S. Air Force colonel was abruptly fired and escorted from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.  Although there was no official reason given for his termination, Dr. Winslow had spoken out against recent management decisions that negatively impacted patient care and work conditions.  We believe he was fired for exercising his right to free speech in his efforts to advocate for our patients and the staff who care for them.

Dr. Winslow has dedicated his life to serving the poor and disenfrancished and to training the next generation of doctors.  He started the first AIDS clinic in Delaware shortly after the start of the epidemic.  For nine years, he served as the Chief of the Division of AIDS medicine and director of the PACE (HIV) Clinic at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, a public teaching hospital, before being elected as Chair of the Department of Medicine.  He is much loved by his staff, trainees and patients, many whom he has treated for over a decade.

Dr. Winslow is also an Air Force flight surgeon who has received numerous medals for flying combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq during 6 operational deployments since 9/11.  He was awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal for serving as the Commander of the U.S. Air Force hospital in Baghdad during the surge in 2008.  As a military doctor, he treated American troops and enemy combatants with equal amounts of his extraordinary skill and compassion. Since 2006, Dr. Winslow has arranged medical care and brought 20 Iraqi children to the U.S. for treatment.

Dr. Winslow has shown time and again that he is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of his patients, his colleagues and his country.  In losing his job, he has paid a steep price for his advocacy.  We as a community are shocked and dismayed at the dishonorable discharge of an honorable man, physician and leader.  Please join me in signing this petition to have Dr. Winslow reinstated as a physician and Chair of Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Reinstate Dr. Dean Winslow to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

Dear Ms. Chavez, Mr. Cortese, Mr. Simitian, Mr. Wasserman and Mr. Yeager:

We wish to protest the wrongful termination of Dr. Dean Winslow, a respected physician, Stanford Affiliated Clinical Professor and U.S. Air Force colonel, from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He was fired for exercising his right to free speech in his efforts to advocate for our patients and the staff who care for them. Dr. Winslow, who was elected Chair of Medicine at SCVMC, was abruptly dismissed and escorted from the hospital on August 12, 2013. Although there was no official reason given for his termination, Dr. Winslow had spoken out against recent management decisions that negatively impacted patient care and work conditions.

Dr. Winslow has dedicated his life to serving the poor and disenfranchised, and to training the next generation of doctors. He started the first AIDS clinic in Delaware in 1986 and was director of SCVMC's PACE (HIV) Clinic for nine years. He is a highly decorated Air Force colonel who has flown numerous combat missions to Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal for serving as the Commander of the U.S. Air Force hospital in Baghdad during the surge in 2008. Dr. Winslow has shown time and again that he is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of his patients, his colleagues and his country. In losing his job, he has paid a steep price for his advocacy. We as a community are shocked and dismayed at the dishonorable discharge of an honorable man, physician and leader.

We ask you to immediately reinstate Dr. Winslow as a physician and Chair of Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
