The Issue

The coronavirus pandemic has caused undue stress and additional mental health challenges for those who already had a mental health diagnosis.  Additionally, we already had a shortage of providers who were eligible to provide services unless they were licensed, which has caused a delay in many others receiving services.  These consumers are now facing additional wait times because of the unavailability of license clinicians who are able to provide services independently. This pandemic has led to an increase in depression, anxiety, suicides, domestic violence, substance use, etc. further burdening economically poor and disadvantaged communities; specifically communities of color. According to many studies, communities of color have been impacted by COVID 19 at higher rates than other racial communities, thus requiring a higher level of support. Therapist and mental health workers who have been working consistently in the field of mental health should be given an opportunity to become licensed via the grandfather clause so that more people would have access to mental health providers to received needed services in the midst of this pandemic. The license boards should consider granting license to help fill the need and access to mental health providers.
