Sigma Alpha Epsilon has a long and storied history of sexual assault at UNM. For over 15 years they had numerous allegations of sexual assault before they were suspended for four years in 2013. Their history of sexual assault has existed since at least 1998 and the last recorded allegation was in 2013. The culture existed for over a decade and it is clear that they should have been permanently banned. They have even been given the name "Sexual Assault Expected" because SAE is so frequently tied up in sexual assault allegations.

In addition, there are separate but equally disturbing incidents at other colleges across America. Notably, at the University of Oklahoma in 2015 where they chanted "There will never be a n***** in SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me." They learned that chant at a national leadership conference. The culture appears to exist at even the highest levels of leadership within Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The Board of Regents and President Garnett S. Stokes have a responsibility to make sure they cannot return and repeat the same mistakes of the past. We need to say that sexual assault at UNM is unacceptable and will never be welcome. That is why this petition exists.
