Eliminate the use of fireworks by Casteel High School and American Leadership Academy.

The undersigned are petitioning Casteel High School and American Leadership Academy to ban the use of fireworks during sporting events (or any other events).

The reasons are as follows:

1.    We live in very congested neighborhoods and sound travels, it is a nuisance.

2.    It is highly upsetting to many pets including dogs, livestock, etc..
·     July 4this the busiest day of the year for pet shelters as many animals are terrified by the sound of fireworks and run off and become lost or hit by cars in their confusion.
·     Horses and livestock escape stalls, jump fences and break down gates to try to get away.

3.    Fireworks can trigger veterans with PTSD.
·     The random explosion of fireworks can trigger a startle response in people who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  The mental health condition develops in some people after they witness a shocking, scary or dangerous event.

4.    Fireworks are bad for the environment.
·     Fireworks cause extensive air pollution in a short amount of time, leaving metal particles, dangerous toxins, harmful chemicals and smoke in the air for hours and days. Some of the toxins never fully decompose or disintegrate, but rather hang around in the environment, poisoning all they come into contact with.

5.    Fireworks are dangerous.
·     Misuse of fireworks can cause serious burns and fatalities.

There are many other ways to celebrate that will not be harmful.  Clapping, creating signs, yelling and whooping.  None of theses things will cause distress to others who choose not to attend sporting events.

To those signing, if you would like to include a respectful typed or handwritten note of the distress you or your animals have experienced, we can attach those to the petition when we take it to the school.  If the principals refuse to acknowledge our concerns we can take it to the next level and speak with the sheriffs office or officials of the town, etc.
