The Elbert County Board of Commissioners has closed the trash compactor site leaving residents no option other than using commercial garbage haulers and out of county facilities to recycle. This is both expensive and an affront to the taxpayers. The role of government is not to "make a profit" but instead it is to effect services that the taxpayers want and pay taxes for. We believe that a factual audit would reveal that the compactor site was operating at, or near to, "break even" and that a renewed operation that was better managed and which allocated costs accurately would be self sustaining. It is time to stop playing politics and to realize that the BOCC should restore our basic and essential services without further delay.
