300th day of protest against BMRCL 17/032010

All Saints Church is a living religious and cultural heritage of Bengaluru. This year the congregation is preparing to celebrate the Church’s 150th anniversary. When the entire city is turning into a concrete jungle, the All Saints Church has compassionately tended to more than fifty trees that form the Church’s Sacred Grove and created a beautiful space for solitude and solace in the midst of chaos and busyness of traffic at Vellara Junction. The Sacred Grove also is the nesting place for more than twenty five bird species including the rare Paradise Flycatcher. The state of Karnataka, BBMP, Karnataka Biodiversity Board, Karnataka Forest Department should be proud of this place and extend all assistance to preserve this place for the future generations.
Instead BMRCL has opted to encroach the Sacred Grove to extend the Vellara Junction Station.
According to the original DPR of phase-2 of 2011,the track was to run underneath the Hosur from Langford Station to Vellara Junction Station . The BMRCL revised the alignment and acquired Church property to an extent of 3618 square metres as permanent acquisition in 2017.
The BMRCL has stated that they will be requiring 1140 square metres as a temporary acquisition to carry out construction activity.
The construction activity will necessitate excavation upto a depth of 80 feet in the process if it encounters hard rock, which may have to be blasted thereby endangering the Church which will only be at a distance of 17 metres from the construction activity.
The BMRCL has not taken up any tests to ascertain the structural strength of the Church by entrusting reputed engineers such as from Archaeological Survey of India.
The 1140 square metres desired by BMRCL has more than 50 trees and the Church has no vacant land for any translocation of trees.
BMRCL claims that no damage will occur in the course of the construction activity and cited the CTO building as an example. All Saints Church is the only one of its kind built in the Indo-Saracenic oeuvre by renowned architect Robert Chisholm in the year 1870 , it’s foundation is made of lime and mortar and in all probability collapse because of the construction activity nearby.
The BMRCL claims that religious places are acquired only when its inevitable. The land holdings in possession is 231 linear metres and 9000 square metres in comparison with Ashram Station New Delhi with a length of only 151 metres, they have more than enough land to build a marvellous Station. So why are they squeezing us for more land?
We will struggle to secure our Right to pray in peace and tranquility at All Saints Church. We request the BMRCL to drop its plans to destroy our Church and Sacred Grove.space for solitude and solace in the midst of chaos and busyness of traffic at Vellara Junction. The Sacred Grove also is the nesting place for more than twenty five bird species including the rare Paradise Flycatcher.
