BMC - Water Cut - How New Buildings when there isn't enough water for existing ones ?
The Issue
The BMC has already announced 20-25% water cuts due to less than normal monsoon.
The monsoon has been deficient by 10%. A 10% variation should not have been a problem, but because Mumbai is bursting at its seams the slightest deficiency KILLS!.
Given that Mumbai is operating at its seams be in terms of natural resources like water, open spaces etc or quality of life issues like pollution control, traffic etc, how are new approvals being granted when existing ones are not having enough.
Mumbai already has a population density of more than 1 lac/ sq. km in many wards. Compare this with even Chinese cities like Shanghai (6000/ sq. km) or Tokyo (6000/sq. km). Simply Put - in a room where 6 Chinese or Japanese stand, a 100 Mumbaikars are packed. Imagine the difference in quality of life. Again Shanghai and Tokyo are some of the most populated cities in the world.
This is due to the unprecedented growth of Towers illegally constructed violating FSI norms and DCR Rules, hand in glove with BMC.
This petition is to;
1. Stop further approvals for new constructions till existing constructions have enough water etc.
2. Prohibit water supply for under construction sites - no water even through tankers, as tankers contain the same water that has been siphoned from our taps.
3. Make provisions in the new DP plan for a sustainable population density in line with mega cities of the world with enough resources, open spaces etc and National Building Code and in line with Supreme Court judgements in
a) Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Ors. vs Kohinoor CTNL Infrastructure Company Private limited & Anr dated Dec 17, 2013
