To Address the Neglect of the Backyard Pit-Bull in Westcliffe, CO
The Issue
We, residents of Custer County, have seen ongoing neglect of Blue, the pit-bull. Blue lacks proper shelter and often goes without food and water. He has often been left for days at a time, causing town employees to feed and care for the animal. Blue lives under a thin camper shell, with no bedding, and is outside all winter, including at night. A a short-haired animal, Blue lacks protection from the elements and has developed sores and possibly frostbite from lying on the cold ground. He is kept on chain and frequently does not have fresh water to drink.
The Mercers consistently violate Colorado Revised State Statute 18-9-202, 1 (a) and (b). Though local authorities know of the situation and violations, and Blue continues to suffer neglect.
Therefore, we the signed request the Custer County Sheriff’s Office and the town of Westcliffe enforce Colorado animal welfare laws – including enforcing the town ordinance the law of three animals per household (the Mercers have five dogs) -- and ensure Blue has adequate care or be removed from the home of the Mercers and placed in a no-kill shelter or rescue organization.
