Blue River PetCare: Live Up to Your “Outstanding Patient Care” Promise — Ban Declawing
The Issue
This Blue River PetCare animal hospital recently took down the misinformation about declawing but are still advertising it on their website. Did AAHA.org ask them to take it down. (Please sign our petition to AAHA.org.)
Blue River PetCare says it is committed to “outstanding patient care,” “medical excellence,” and supporting the veterinary professionals who care for animals.
The company states that it is: “A growing community of veterinary practices and dedicated professionals working together to better the lives of the patients we treat.”
Blue River also says: “We focus on the health and wellbeing of our clinical team members as much as we do the animals they treat.”
Those values should include protecting cats from this unnecessary, inhumane, and harmful amputation procedure.
Declawing amputates the last bones of a cat’s toes and causes chronic pain, complications, and lifelong behavioral problems and suffering. Humane alternatives, including scratching posts, nail trims, claw caps, training, and deterrents are easy, effective, and available.
Veterinary professionals across the country have spoken out about the moral stress and moral injury caused when they are required to perform, assist with, schedule, or witness declaw surgeries. Blue River is one of the top 10 veterinary groups in the country with over 200 vet clinics, yet many of its hospitals continue to perform declawing. Some Blue River clinics even advertise their declawing services, some perform four-paw declaws, some promote false information about declawing, and some perform declawing regularly.
Meanwhile, other major veterinary groups have taken action, even while maintaining veterinary autonomy in their practice models:
VCA Animal Hospitals banned elective declawing in 2020, stating: “In our 33-year history since the inception of VCA we have rarely mandated anything related to medical practice… Our doctors have been given the freedom on how they practice medicine, as long as what they are doing falls into a range of accepted standards of care. We no longer feel that elective declawing of cats is a best practice… Patient safety and welfare always come first.”
Mission Veterinary Partners implemented a company-wide declawing ban in 2021, stating: “While we have never mandated any medical protocols, we believe that in this instance it is shortsighted and we feel compelled to take a stance in order to ensure that we abide by one of our core values: to do the right thing.”
PetVet Care Centers (2025) respects autonomy but limits it where ethics and welfare are involved, stating that declawing should only be performed when medically necessary for the cat.
National Veterinary Associates (NVA) called declawing inhumane, citing chronic pain and long-term harm, and adopted a company-wide ban effective February 2026 after direct engagement with its CEO.
CareVet has also informed City the Kitty in July 2026 that it plans to announce a declawing ban on August 1.
The companies that banned declawing still respect medical autonomy, but they do not use it as a shield for harmful, inhumane, and outdated procedures. They chose to prioritize best patient care and animal welfare first.
These companies have shown that veterinary autonomy and protecting cats can exist together.
We are asking Blue River PetCare to live up to its own stated commitment to patient care, medical excellence, and veterinary team well-being by:
✔ Ending declawing at all Blue River hospitals.
✔ Protecting veterinary professionals from the moral distress of participating in a procedure they believe harms cats.
✔ Providing cat owners with education about humane alternatives.
Blue River PetCare: Compassionate veterinary care should never include permanently and inhumanely harming healthy cats.
