BLUE MOUNTAINS NEEDS A CLIMBING GYM.

BLUE MOUNTAINS NEEDS A CLIMBING GYM.
The issue
We’re a group of Blue Mountains locals — climbers, parents, teachers and active members of the community — asking Blue Mountains City Council (BMCC) to build and run a world-class indoor bouldering gym in an currently under-utilised area at the Katoomba Sports & Aquatic Centre.
Climbing is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, now proudly Olympic, and loved by all ages — from school kids to grandparents. But despite the Blue Mountains being a globally recognised outdoor climbing mecca, there’s no public indoor climbing gym anywhere in our region.
This means there is no hub for the enormous local and visiting climbing community to meet and train. Furthermore it prevents all other active members of our community - from school kids to seniors and everyone in-between - to trial and participate in this ever-growing sport.
We’re calling for change.
We have presented an in-depth proposal to BMCC for their consideration. Council is enthusiastic about the idea but regards it as a low priority project.
A climbing gym would have a tremendously positive impact on our region:
- a safe recreational community hub for climbers and all active residents and visitors
- boost mental and physical health for all age groups (from school kids to seniors)
- create a gateway to the mountains’ great outdoor adventure culture
- supply a world class training facility, including for our own homegrown talent
- complete the Blue Mountains’ reputation as Australia’s number one climbing Mecca and a world-famous climbing destination
- flow-on economic benefits for our region, including tourism and additional revenue for council and our community
Our goal is to show just how many of us believe the Blue Mountains region needs this gym — as a priority.
